Steven received his Bachelors in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and began his Oriental Medical training interning at YueYang Hospital in Shanghai. There he got to see first hand how powerful medicine can be when you combine the ancient Eastern ways with modern Western medicine. He went on to complete his Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at the New England School of Acupuncture in Watertown, Mass.

Steven started his career in the free clinics of Dimock Hospital and the AIDS Care Project in Boston before opening a private practice in Philadelphia, PA. He now co-owns the Healing Arts Center of Philadelphia, a group wellness center that integrates mainstream and complimentary medicine all under one roof.

Though he maintains a varied practice, his main focus of infertility has led him to be featured in Philadelphia Magazine, Philly Style, and CBS Health Watch. He pioneered bringing Acupuncture to every major fertility clinic in the Philadelphia area and has helped bridge the gap between the local Reproductive Endocrinology and Acupuncture communities.

Moved here from the Boston area, she has treated patients in a variety of settings, including hospitals, detox clinics and women’s centers. She is currently on staff at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Southern New Jersey where she treats a variety of conditions, including pain management, allergies, immune system disorders and women’s health issues. She practices both Traditional Chinese style acupuncture and the gentler, Japanese-style. She has special training in cosmetic acupuncture.

Her career as an acupuncturist began in Asia where she lived for three years. Having worked and studied in both Japan and Thailand, Sheri learned how effective Eastern medicine could be in the treatment and prevention of disease. Upon her return, she enrolled in the New England School of Acupuncture and completed a four-year Master’s degree. She holds a National Board Certification in Acupuncture from the NCCAOM and licensed to practice in the states of Massachusetts, New Jersey and Philadelphia.

She has been featured on various local TV shows for her work with fertility and cosmetic acupuncture and has been interviewed by the New Jersey Courier Post on the treatment of allergies. She frequently teaches community classes at the Lady of Lourdes Hospital Wellness Center and regularly participates in corporate wellness events in both NJ and PA.

From J

I went to the Philadelphia Healing Arts Center for 10 weeks and got pregnant after trying for 2 years. My husband and I have been seeing a fertility specialist and hadn't had any success with multiple IUIs. We decided to take a break and got pregnant without any extra help - except the acupuncture! There are 3 acupuncturists in the office. I saw both Sheri and Steve and couldn't be happier. Very compassionate, knowledgeable and loved the Saturday and evening hours.

J and her husband conceived in March, 2008. J is 41 years old.

From Tom and Dana

Steve thank you so much for all your help and guidance throughout a process of too many tears and joys. My husband and I both received treatment`as his sperm count was only 10 million and my pcos made my cycles very irregular. After the 2nd month I had the first 28 day cycle of my life. After the 3rd month Tom's count had gone up to 27 million. The 4th month we finally saw that evil stick show a second line! Tom, Justin and I all thank you!

Justin was born on 8/03/06. Dana is 33 years old.

From Shirley

The combination of Acupuncture and therapy is what did it for me. I came to Steve as a last resort before IVF. I had done 4 inseminations with clomid and wanted to take a break. 1 month off medication and on Acupuncture and that's all it took. I give some credit to the therapy as well as it was the least stressed I had been throughout the whole process.

Casey was born on 10/03/05. Shirley is 35 years old.

From Michelle

Essentially every RE I went to gave me the donor speech and told me I would never conceive on my own. It was by no means fast, but after about 7 months of accupuncture and teapills we were able to conceive!! Steve was nothing but great and patient because it was a hectic and crazy ride. The acu/herb combo actually let me get sleep through the whole process so I can't recommend it more. It was fun sending those RE's baby pics after all that negativity.

Jacob was born on 01/18/05. Michelle is 39 years old.

From Bobette

The biggest change I noticed with acupuncture was the ability to relax. During the embryo transfer of my first IVF cycle, the stress level was so high and I was unable to relax no matter what I did. Receiving acupuncture before and immediately after embryo transfer of my 2nd IVF cycle made a huge difference. I was very relaxed and felt no stress. It gave me a positive feeling that this cycle would be a success...and it was.

Sarah Jane was born on 07/23/03. Bobette is 37 years old.

From Karen

My experience was an extremely positive one! Steven explained every saspect of my treatment as it was being administered. He was always willing to be as flexible as need be to coordinate treatment with my infertility care, and a real support through a difficult time. Steven treated me for approximately 2 months before providing treatment coordinated with my IVF procedure. I became pregnant on the 2nd try and with the added acupuncture treatment and I strongly believe it was a factor in that cycle's success. It was a great experience, provided for me a successful pregnancy and increased my belief in alternative forms of medicine.

Modern medicine has made many great advancements in the treatment of infertility and has given couples a chance when previously there was none. Unfortunately, they are not exactly the most pleasant procedures to undergo between the hormones, bloodwork and injections. To add to all this, the success rates are usually only moderate at best. Recent research has shown that Acupuncture can greatly enhance the success of these procedures including Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI), In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF), and IVF with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

Watch CBS's Health Watch Report on New Acupuncture & IVF Research

Excerpt from the article: Fertility treatments are traditionally long, complicated and expensive. But this new study says acupuncture is doing wonders helping women conceive. Old City acupuncturist Steven Mavros has a wall full of success stories. It's covered with pictures of babies. He said they were conceived with the help of acupuncture. "We know it helps boost blood flow into the lower abdomen and into the uterus and the ovaries," said Mavros. He said acupuncture also helps regulate menstrual cycles to improve fertility. The new study, that covered 1,300 women, found acupuncture improves the odds of conception by 65 percent when done before IVF fertility treatments. "It's not a magic bullet. The IVF is doing most of the work. The acupuncture just seems to make it better," said Mavros. Click Here to Watch the Video

Most of Acupuncture's benefits will specifically increase the response and success of all forms of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). Studies have focused on how Acupuncture can increase the blood flow in the uterus and ovaries creating a more suitable and fertile environment for mature follicles to both develop and implant. Additionally, treating the man at the same time will allow them to provide better samples with better counts, and motility/morphology rates.

How does Acupuncture integrate with IVF?

Research over the past few years has shown tremendous benefit to how Acupuncture can greatly increase the success rates of IVF and IVF with ICSI. It all started when a German study was published in Fertility & Sterility, a well respected infertility journal that included over 150 women undergoing IVF. The study showed conclusively that the use of Acupuncture before and after fertilized embryo transfer (42.5% success rate) had a significantly higher success rate than a normal transfer without Acupuncture (26.3% success rate). In the years since that study, similar ones have been done in Denmark, Colorado and China and all have shown not only this approximate 15-20% boost in pregnancy rates, but that it lasts all the way through the pregnancy.

That was just with one treatment before and after IVF transfer. Leading up to the transfer, other research has shown, Acupuncture produces a greater number of follicles in poor responders, greater blood flow to the uterus improving the endometrial lining, and reduces stress and tension (often shown to decrease fertility). Put this all together and Acupuncture can change a long shot procedure into a likely success.

What does this mean for you if you are going through IVF?

It means more hope, fewer cycles, and a shorter wait for what you most desire: a beautiful healthy baby. All forms of ART are draining; financially, physically and emotionally. All that work and all that investment and all you get is a single roll of the dice. We know that Acupuncture is not the magic bullet, but we also know that with Acupuncture your odds of success will go up greatly, and that's all that most couples need to hear to realize how invaluable a tool it can be.

When should I start Acupuncture for my upcoming IVF cycle?

Most patients require a series of ongoing treatments over a month or two to gain all the benefits Acupuncture can provide. The recommended treatment schedule is based upon your individual case and can vary. In many cases, we recommend that you start Acupuncture treatment 1 - 2 months prior to the commencement of the IVF cycle to ensure you get the most out of it. As the embryo transfer gets closer, the frequency of visits may increase.

Do you perform the transfer protocol in the German and Danish studies at my clinic?

Since the study's publication, Steven Mavros, L.OM. has pioneered bringing Acupuncture to every major clinic in the Philadelphia area including Penn Fertility, Main Line Fertility, Abington Reproductive, Fertility and Gyn Associates, RMA (formerly Northern Fertility), Cooper Fertility and Reproductive Sciences Institute (RSI). Each clinic has generously allowed us to use their facilities during the day of the transfer. When the day of the transfer arrives, one of us will meet you at the clinic and work with the IVF nurses and doctors to time the treatment correctly. We administer 2 treatments, one immediately before, and one immediately following the embryo transfer. Not only does it help increase your chance of success, but the Acupuncture will help relax and calm you during a very stressful procedure. After the transfer day, it's usually advised to receive a follow up Acupuncture session in the office about a week later as this has also been shown to help boost success rates.

Conceiving Naturally with the Help of Acupuncture

Before taking the jump to using Clomid, or doing IUI's or IVF, trying on your own with Acupuncture and Herbs is a great option. As long as there is nothing physically impeding you from getting pregnant (e.g., tubal blockage or hostile uterine environment), Acupuncture can generally help regulate your cycle and optimize every month's chance of being the one that works.

In women, Acupuncture has been clinically shown to increase the blood supply to the uterus and ovaries, as well as promote timely ovulation and an ideal luteal phase. Acupuncture seems to have a regulating effect on the body's pituitary-hypothalmic-ovarian axis and can help make an irregular or anovulatory cycle normal. We have seen great success treating infertility issues such as high FSH (Follicle Simulating Hormone), Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), Endometriosis, Ovulation problems, unexplained infertility, poor ovarian reserve, poor egg quality, luteal phase defect, chronic miscarriage, thin endometrium, irregular periods and amenorrhea.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine isn't just for women. Male factor can also be addressed. For men, there is evidence showing our ability to increase sperm count, as well as improve motility and morphology percentages.

As specialists in the treatment of reproductive enhancement, we recognize that every person and couple having difficulty conceiving need individualized treatment because no 2 people present with the exact same issues. With that customized approach, Acupuncture treatment can be an effective means to aid conception in most cases of infertility.

How long will it take for me to get pregnant?

We wish there was a quick answer to this one, but it very much depends on each couple's individual situation. We've seen success anywhere from the first cycle to 9 months later. Most patients (men and women) need approximately 3 months treatment to find success. Studies have shown, however, that some couples will succeed at the 6-9 month mark, as it can take that long for their cycles to be fully regulated and ready to conceive. For women, consistent treatment is important so specific hormonal adjustments can be made at each week of the cycle using Acupuncture and herbs. Every week is a significant opportunity to heal a particular segment of the four-phase menstrual cycle (menstruation, follicular phase, ovulation, and luteal phase). For male factor, a typical course of 10 weeks can do the trick, as it usually takes a full sperm generating cycle (72 days approx).

Remember that trying to get pregnant is a statistical game. The more you try, naturally or with Assisted Reproductive Technologies (IVF/IUI), the better your chances are. This applies to Acupuncture as well – the longer you allow it to correct and balance your body, the better your chances are. Unofrtunately, there is no quick path when it comes to conception and full-term pregnancy of a healthy child, but it's well worth the wait.

When during my cycle should I get Acupuncture done?

Acupuncture treatments should be done on a regular basis throughout each phase of your cycle (generally weekly). Therefore any time is a good time to start. If you'd like to start with a fresh cycle, we generally advise coming in 2-3 days after your period has begun, but again any time is fine.

Acupuncture is a medical system that has been used to diagnose, treat and prevent illness for over 2000 years. Acupuncture is performed by inserting fine needles into points along the body, stimulating the flow of the body''s vital energy and functionality, known as Qi (pronounced 'Chee'). These acu-points connect to the network of meridians that flow beneath the surface of the skin, where they flow into the major organs. When the flow of Qi is disrupted, the body's systems become imbalanced. This is frequently experienced as illness or pain, and can appear in women as period irregularities, menstrual pain, breakthrough bleeding, etc. The goal of acupuncture is to clear away these disruptions and revitalize the flow of energy in the meridians.

Acupuncture is proven to remedy acute or chronic ailments, relieve pain, enhance recuperative powers, and strengthen the immune system. It is also effective in soothing the mind and balancing the body's hormones and chemicals, thus regulating the cycle and enhancing fertility.

During the initial consultation, the practitioner will take a comprehensive history of health and illness. This provides a diagram of the overall state of the body, not just a particular symptom. The practitioner asks questions, takes your pulse, examines your tongue, and sometimes palpates your abdomen. The initial visit can last up to 90 minutes, including your first treatment. Subsequent visits usually last about 45 minutes and are done on a weekly basis depending on the patients need for treatment. The course of treatments can vary widely. Problems that have been around for a long time may take more treatments to resolve than ones that are acute. Your treatment course will be determined after the initial consultation and re-assessed after each visit.
Herbal Medicine

Before pharmaceuticals and even the use of Acupuncture needles, herbal remedies were used to heal and balance the human body. Chinese herbs have shown their effectiveness under the scrutiny of both empirical study and modern clinical trials. These herbs can be used to augment the treatment of a particular imbalance, working together or sometimes in place of Acupuncture and other medicines. Unlike most drugs, the herbs are put into complex formulas that are specific to an individual's condition, not just any one symptom. Additionally, the formulas are so well balanced that they hardly ever cause side effects.

Do I have to cook it and will it taste bad?

In the past, patients had to purchase a large bag of raw herbs, cook them for a half hour every day, and drink bitter teas. Though that option is still available to you, convenient patent medicines have become readily available and are much less of a hassle. These take high quality ingredients and put them into small, round pills that are easy to take and taste much better - no brewing or simmering needed.

Herbal remedies are usually taken a few times a day and can be used for as little as one month, to as long as one year. Herbal consultations can be included in an Acupuncture visit with the only extra charge being the cost of the herbs themselves. They can also be done separately, and unlike Acupuncture, follow-ups are only needed every other week. Herbal medicines are usually immediately available following a consultation, however, some may take a few days to prepare due to the individual nature of every formula.

Are herbs expensive?

Unlike prescription drugs, herbs are extremely cost effective. Herbal medicine that lasts about 30 days can range between 30$ - 40$. This is similar to the average co-pay of a prescription drug plan, with the added benefit that you won't be on them for the rest of your life.
